Spend Angel is built with privacy at its core. Camera-scanned receipts stay entirely on your device. The optional email forwarding feature processes receipts on our server, but we only keep your data long enough for you to fetch it.
Spend Angel ("the App") is a receipt scanning and expense tracking application for iOS. This privacy policy explains how the App handles your data depending on which features you use.
When you scan a receipt with your camera, basic text recognition is performed entirely on your device using Apple's Vision framework. If you have configured an AI key (Google Gemini or Anthropic Claude), the receipt image is sent to the selected AI provider for more accurate parsing. This is optional and requires you to enter your own API key in Settings. Without an AI key, no receipt data leaves your device during scanning.
Spend Angel offers an optional email forwarding feature. When you forward a receipt to your @spend-angel.com address, the attachment is:
Received by our email worker (hosted on Cloudflare), sent to our server for processing with the Claude Vision API (provided by Anthropic), and stored temporarily until the App fetches the parsed result. Once your device has fetched the receipt data, the original image and parsed result remain on the server until you delete your account or the data is purged.
If you prefer not to use this feature, you can use camera scanning and bank imports exclusively — no data will leave your device.
When you use the email forwarding feature, we process: the sender email address (to identify the forwarded receipt), the receipt image or PDF attachment, and the parsed receipt data (merchant, items, total, date). We do not collect your name, location, device identifiers, or analytics data. We do not use tracking technologies or cookies.
When you use AI-powered scanning with your own API key, receipt images are sent to your chosen provider: Google Gemini (Google's privacy policy) or Anthropic Claude (Anthropic's privacy policy). Neither provider uses API inputs for model training. When you use the email forwarding feature, receipt images are processed via the Anthropic API on our server. The App does not integrate with any analytics, advertising, or tracking services and does not contain ads.
All expense data, receipt images, and settings from camera scanning are stored locally on your device using Apple's SwiftData framework, protected by your device's encryption and passcode / Face ID / Touch ID. Data from the email forwarding feature is stored on our server until fetched by your device.
The App requests access to your camera to scan receipts and your photo library to attach receipt images. These permissions are used solely for the purpose of capturing and storing receipt images on your device.
The App allows you to export your expense data as CSV or PDF files. These exports are generated locally on your device. How you share or store these exports is entirely under your control.
The App does not knowingly collect any information from children under the age of 13. Since the App collects no data at all, there is no risk of children's data being collected.
If we ever change how data is handled, we will update this privacy policy and notify users through the App. Any future features that involve data processing will always be opt-in and transparently communicated.
